Strength & Resiliency (Youth Focus) 2022 with Peter Thorburn

Identify our strengths and do more of it. Building trust and resilience in our people, then they can take charge of their own treatment therefore nurturing empowerment within whānau. Taking the positives in people and their surroundings as they are key aspects contributing to wellbeing. Anyone can recover and take control of their life; they need to be surrounded by the right people and have the necessary resources to heal.

Resilience is the ability to not only survive but thrive, an important attribute to have to bounce back when facing difficulties in life. It’s getting back up after being knocked down. Built over time, resilience is a response to both environmental and individual factors.

Peter Thorburn took 10 of our Tāmaki whānau on the 2nd of November through how the strength-based approach builds resilience when doing their mahi in our communities. He took us through various scenarios to identify and discover the strengths within people, so that they are at the centre of the care that they need and how we can help them build resilience.

Utilising a strength-based and resilience framework when responding to the needs of communities is key. A lot of the time only they can heal themselves. It encourages kōrero and building relationships based on trust, knowing that we will be playing into the strengths of our people.
