SHINE Respond Family Violence Prevention Session
On Wednesday 29 April 2026, the HEART Movement hosted the SHINE Respond Family Violence Prevention session at Tāmaki Community Development Trust. It was a powerful morning of kōrero, reflection, and learning together around family violence prevention and how we can support safer communities.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the kaupapa. Special thanks to Roxanne and Sirikit for hosting us so warmly and to Dr Emma Barker-Clarke for facilitating such an insightful session!
Sirikit kindly shared some reflections from the training and the impact it had on her:
“Having previously attended a Shine Prevention training, there is always information you may not have heard or remember.
I enjoyed Dr Emma and her knowledge of Family Harm. She explains what FH is but also involves the audience for our understanding. I found the session to be very interactive, lots of information but Dr Emma back that up by sending us the slides she presented.
What really sunk in my thoughts was just to be available and present for those who are experiencing FH. You dont have to be an expert, be a friendly ear. Be open to you listening and asking courageous questions, ( are you okay, how can I help ) but dont rush the person and don't judge their decision making.
Being present and available to support families have a community approach, know your own limitations and reach out to others in your community to help you and support the family. Build your own community network.
I also enjoyed the group discussions and hearing others share about their personal experiences. They felt safe to share in an open space. There was laughter and tears shared. Sacred moments of learning.”
We are really grateful to everyone who showed up, shared space, and contributed to these important conversations! Trainings like these remind us of the importance of community, connection, and supporting one another through compassion and understanding.
