General Awareness with SHINE: Introductory Session on Family Violence

According to the New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse (NZFVC), 1 in 3 women has experienced physical/sexual intimate partner violence in their lifetime. A shocking statistic because nobody deserves to live in fear. Family violence is an umbrella term used to cover a broad range of controlling behaviours. Physical, sexual, and psychological to scare and intimidate partners, children, sibings, or even people living together.

On the 9th of February, we had Marg and Samira from the SHINE Respond team walk six of our Tāmaki community members through an introduction to family violence training. A myriad of different topics around family violence were covered: what is family violence, various ways to tell coercive control, and a discussion on how to best respond in certain scenarios just to name a few.

SHINE is a HEART member organisation that provides specialist family violence services, with the primary aim of supporting people experiencing family violence to become safe. Trainings like this is at the very core of our Kaupapa as the HEART Movement and SHINE, to promote family violence prevention and healthy relationships in Tāmaki.
